THE ULTIMATE WATERMAN IS A UNIQUE MULTI-DISCIPLINE WATER-BASED CONTEST TO FIND THE WORLD'S BEST ALL-AROUND OCEAN ATHLETES. THIS INVITATION ONLY EVENT HAS NOT ONLY BEEN DESIGNED TO PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY TEST THE LIMITS OF THE ATHLETES AS NEVER BEFORE, IT'S SET TO INSPIRE A NEW GENERATION TO CROSS TRAIN IN THE OCEAN.

IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE WINTER OF 2019/2020, EIGHT OF THE WORLD'S FINEST WATERMEN AND FOUR OF THE WORLD'S FINEST WATERWOMEN WILL BE INVITED TO GATHER TO TACKLE THE RUGGED AND UNPREDICTABLE CONDITIONS OF THE MAUI COAST IN HAWAII.

TO BE CROWNED THE ULTIMATE WATERMAN OR THE ULTIMATE WATERWOMAN, AN ATHLETE WILL NEED TO COMPETE AND EXCEL IN EIGHT DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES.

FOUNDERS

GREG TOWNSEND 

Known as the godfather of surfing in New Zealand, this event was his brainchild for the better part of a decade. As ex-CEO of Surfing New Zealand, he has shaped the professional surf industry in New Zealand.

Greg brought Titus and Laird on board who helped him realize his dream of creating the first global water sports contest that challenges a vast array of disciplines and skills.

TITUS KINIMAKA

Hawaiian surfing royalty. A world-renowned waterman, big wave surfer, stuntman and global adventurer, Titus Kinimaka is a true ultimate waterman. Titus has been on board with TUW since its inception. His expertise helped create the format and added the main ingredient: authenticity and ancient tradition.

LAIRD HAMILTON

Considered by many as the ultimate waterman and one of the most recognizable figures in world surfing. He is a pioneer of tow-in surfing, foil-boarding and SUP surfing, a fearless big wave charger and actor. Laird has been involved with TUW since day one.

GABRIELLE REECE

Gabrielle Reece is not only a professional beach volleyball legend, but also an inspirational leader in the health and fitness world. She is a New York Times bestselling author, actor, model, wife and mother. As Nike's first female spokeswoman, Gabby is the embodiment of athleticism and natural beauty, with a passion for fitness and healthy living. Gabby has been a supporter of The Ultimate Waterman since its inception and acts as an advisor for TUW.

Joel Parkinson is considered without doubt as one of the most naturally talented waterman world surfing has seen. He won the 2012 World Surfing Title and this surfing world champion augmented his reputation by competing and winning the Molakai Prone Paddleboard race with former Ironman Wes Berg. Joel’s involvement in TUW came about because of his passion for supporting the core surf industry and his love for multi discipline waterman activities.

A Hawaiian living legend, Kala Alexander is a lifelong waterman and a professionally sponsored surfer since the age of 13. Kala competed as an athlete in the first two Ultimate Waterman contests and is the athlete's  representative. He is the Vice President of the Mauli Ola Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing hope and confidence to individuals living with Cystic Fibrosis.

The Ultimate Waterman is a global sports sensation that delivers a special combination of beautiful scenery, extreme sports and active interaction with the athletes and community.

Twelve dedicated athletes with unique backgrounds from around the globe will compete in the various disciplines the ocean offers. 

MEDIA

TUW is a global broadcast, participation, and spectator sensation that will be showcased to the world by media across all platforms, using the latest technologies to capture unparalleled moments. 

TOURISM

Hawaii will be showcased as a magical, breathtaking destination which will create tourism beneficial to the island’s economy. 

CULTURE

We preserve the history of the Polynesian culture by showcasing traditional ceremonies and engaging with the local generations of Hawaiians. 

EDUCATION

The audience will gain vast knowledge of distinctive ocean sports and Hawaiian history. 

CONSERVATION
We contribute to environmental protection and ocean conservation by making this event self-sustainable and focus on using natural resources.
COMMUNITY

“Ultimate Paddle Day” is a public participation day for local and international competitors combining surf, OC 1 and SUP. In addition, TUW teams up with the Mauli Ola Foundation to create a special day of surf and ocean therapy.
